In the case of a “Zero defects” project, it is necessary to install automatic controllers in order to verify markings conformity (lot number, date, article code, etc.). These controls are generally performed by cameras which analyze the printed information in different locations along the packaging line.

The installation of these cameras has the disadvantage of the multiplication of “vision” units where the user must think about integration, ejection, lighting protection, interface, etc.

VCA’s solution optimizes the “vision” design to allow integration of the vision controls inside the machine that already exists! Thanks to the miniaturization of components, the automatic control of lighting in number, position and intensity, the control by servo-mechanism of the lens settings and the integration of standard industrial cases with connectors, it is possible to control the compliance of markings with a minimum of control units.

VCA’s solution takes advantage of the packaging positioning devices: products are perfectly positioned when control occurs and, in case of flaw, ejection is guaranteed. This way, the faulty product is ejected before reaching the next packing step.

Multiled : Camera + light in one box

Industrial vision systems generally use fix settings for illumination and lens : Position of light and focal length are not subjected to be adjusted after the camera installation. This configuration has a number of disadvantages.

First of all, we have to define what is a “marking format” in terms of vision control. A “marking format” is a combination of marking and packaging elements : characters font, characters size, printing modes, number of text lines, number of characters per words, markings position, available space around the marking zone, texture and color of the printed support, etc.

In case of multiple formats markings on the same packaging line, new markings formats require a light range that could be impossible to achieve by simply changing the camera electronic settings (gain, etc.). The only way is to use different camera lenses for each marking format. In the same way, new format could require new lighting which could be impossible to install due to the available space.

On the other hand, the mounting of vision components (camera, lens, illumination) as separated items could lead to uncontrolled situations. For example, when accessing the camera location for maintenance purpose, the user can easily change the mechanical settings of lens and light. By this way, the vision unit could become unusable because the operator does not know that the system is no longer in the same configuration.

Our solution consists in a fully teleoperated unit including camera, lens and lights. The lens aperture and focus can be teleoperated and the light can be controlled in position, angle, number and intensity.

The dynamic operation of Multiled offers great advantages :

Thanks to the Multiled, it is possible to control variable and low contrast markings like embossed markings (carton cases, plastic tubes, metallic tubes) or markings on glass.
